This amount is enough to live in the country for six months - a year, while you are trying to legalize your diplomas. Often people come to emigrate as a civil engineer, like me, for example, that is, you need a certain time, in order to confirm your diploma at the Canadian level. Then you need to finish some specific items. After you can confirm this, you will need to look for a job, it will take time. Some people come with not very strong English, they need to take some time to the courses, in order to somehow pull themselves up. All this takes a certain time, count, that it can be six months, and maybe a year.
Further, we are talking about those 80% of people who come with such a sum of money. At the same time, there are always people who did business in Russia, or they sold an apartment in Moscow or in St. Petersburg. You know that an apartment in Moscow can easily cost 3-4 million dollars, maybe 5, I do not know. Accordingly, when these people appear already here in the country, it is clear that they do not want to go to work in a factory, at a factory or look for work as some kind of beginning ordinary engineer. Naturally, they want to somehow dispose of their money, and now, just now I'm getting to the topic of the question that is being asked to me. "Sergei, what should I do? So, I came, I have money, what should I do with this? "The question was the following:" I want to open a business, what should I do? Should I buy an existing business or should I open some kind of business? "
The question is very good and important, and I'll tell you what, perhaps, is worth doing in this situation. I'll start a little from the other. When you do business in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, many people have a feeling that they say "the American dollar - it is in Africa, the American dollar." That is, roughly speaking, that if I sell shoes, I will sell it in the same way in Canada. Shoes - she's shoes. This, in fact, is not quite true. The fact is that the specifics of doing business in Canada, in my opinion, are quite different. If in Russia, from what I hear, it's still different. If you can open a small business and survive yourself. In Canada, this is more difficult to do, because all kinds of plazas, trade corporations, stores that are huge chains that sell shoes, compete with them will be quite difficult.
Let's do it. I would start a little from another, if I was in this position, then I would ask the question not from this. I would ask the question: "Sergei, I'm coming to Canada, do I have to start a business right away?" Or should I wait for a while, look around? "I would say that you need to wait some time, because if you come and immediately rush into the business, you still have very little guidance in the country, and, in my opinion, this will lead to a great chance of failure. Not understanding the specifics of business, not understanding the mentality of people, your buyers, there is a very high probability that you can go bankrupt, in my opinion. Therefore, if you want my advice, I would say so. Take some pause, at least six months, even better, if you can work for someone, for someone. If you decide to sell shoes, then try to get into the store and see how this business works. I would not be surprised if, in the end, you say: "This is not at all how I imagined it. Either I'm not going to sell shoes at all, or now, based on this new knowledge, I will position myself differently in this business. "Therefore, once again, if there is a question of waiting, I would wait. Now, having experience of living in the country, I understand that when we come from Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, we have a lot of things about other things, a different view of them.
The second point. For the same reason, if we talk about buying an existing business or organizing our own, then I would say that the question is not easy. Buy an existing business, it will most likely be expensive. Here, when you buy a business, you do not buy buildings, buildings, because most businesses rent their sales space. You actually buy a set of customers, traffic, as it is called here. That is, if you buy a flower shop, then you do not actually buy any store space. You get the contacts of the suppliers for the first time, while you decide with whom you will work further. And, the second moment, you get some violent clientele. That is, a person has been in this business for 10-15 years, and during this time there has already been a constant clientele of people that comes. But, there is always one subtle point here. These people, indeed, 15 years came to this business to buy flowers. Will they come to you when they see that the owner has changed in business. This is an important point.
I had a situation where one of my clients, a very stupid person. He is a professional chef, very high level, decided to buy an existing restaurant. It was a national cuisine, I will not go into details. The bottom line is that it was ethnic ethnic cuisine and not its culture at all. He decided: "I am a professional chef, there is no difference what to cook. If it's Chinese, I'll cook Chinese, I'll cook Indian, so I'll cook Indian food. "In my opinion, this is what happened to this business, a man quickly enough, provided that he had already lived in Canada for quite a number of years , burnt in this business. Because the clientele simply went away, and the money, as you understand it, went with the clientele. Unfortunately, such a story happened.
At us in Canada as, as well as in Russia, as well as in other countries, there is such concept "��������". You probably know what it is. The franchise is McDonald's, Starbucks, in Canada it's Tim Hortons and so on. The mass of all kinds of brands, where it owns some very large corporation, which managed to organize the entire process, and you can buy from them one of the objects. That is, if you want a McDonald's restaurant, then you need to queue up and wait for you to be given such an opportunity. I would say that for an emigrant with good money, perhaps, this is the more correct way. Why? Because people, buyers go to the so-called brand. If I'm traveling somewhere in Canada, I've come to a small town, I want a snack, and the first thing that comes to my mind is, "I'm going to go to McDonald's." Because McDonald's is everywhere McDonald's. What's in Toronto, what's in Calgary. So if I come to this McDonald's, I'll get all the same burgers, all kinds of sandwiches, whatever they offer, fried potatoes. And to me, by and large, it does not matter who owns this restaurant. Correctly? I understand that McDonald's is he McDonald's. He owns an Arab - well, he owns a Jew or a Russian - I, too, is absolutely the same. But here there is another problem. When you turn to a very large company with a great reputation, say that I want to buy your franchise, then do not think that you have somehow made them happy. They usually have a pretty decent list of people who already claim a new place, where they will open their regular restaurant. And they from this list, naturally, choose. I'm afraid that for a new immigrant this can be problematic, because you are not in the first place at all in this list at all. Even if you have good money, and you are ready to pay them right away. I'm afraid that the owner of the franchise will choose someone else, because he needs a man who does not spoil his reputation. If he opens a Quiznos, for example, he wants to make sure that a person has risen, he has experience that he used to sell a similar product, he worked somewhere in the field of nutrition, that is, he has certain skills in work with people, etc. That is, just the factor that you have money for them may not be the most crucial moment. This is the situation.
I would advise in this case to go to smaller franchises who will talk with you. Because such franchises as Tim Hortons or McDonald's, or Starbucks - it's quite possibly very large whales, even if you have just arrived and you have money, they may not pay attention to you. Maybe it makes sense to try some franchise of a smaller tailoring. Nevertheless, this is more priority, because in this case, if you do not speak English very well and you do not really know the scope of this business and do not yet orient yourself in the country, it will be a more correct way if you want my opinion on this account.
So, I will say it again. If you ask this question, if you have money and you are ready to come to the camp and start a business, I would advise you to take a short pause, look around, look around, live a little. Moreover, if you have money, then, as a rule, this means that you have some sort of economic freedom, then you can live, just look at what the country is like. And I would recommend this and do it. The second way is if you want to organize your business, then, probably, it is better to go on the path of franchising, as I said, but do not be frightened of anything. If you know that something is very good, and you know that you will definitely prosper in your business, because nobody does it better than you, it happens. For example, we have quite successful Russian artists who come. Maybe he does not speak English very well, but nobody cares about it, no one asks how well he speaks English. People look at his work, if they see some smart pictures, they will pay money for them. And I know such examples.
If you are confident in yourself, you know your subject well, if you know your business well, to which you are aiming, then, I think, there is nothing terrible in this. Here, about such a scheme.
